Despite getting only 3 hours of sleep, today has been sickly productive. 1 page drawn, and two more commissions completed. I decided not to put these off anymore, coz I don't want anyone to hate me forever.

I haven't updated the PAYREY page, but I have about 4 more old Shorty commissions to complete, and only one more of the new $20 batch... and all six of the $50 colored pieces to draw still (those may have to wait til after the comic rush subsides). So, most ALL commissions will be mailed out NEXT WEEK, highly likely. Need to get these off my back!!!!!!!

I just drew this page like just now. It's a fight scene that takes place about halfway thru the book... I'm far beyond this scene, now, but I'm just now finishing it up...

Shitty scan... my computer is making dying noises. Maybe after this book comes out and I become a comics millionaire, I can buy a new one.

Kind of a spoiler I guess... Sharknife assumes many new forms in DOUBLE Z. And he fights various weird new things.

Freakin' goin crazy! Double Z crazy. Drawing this... Writing developing stuff for that old idea, Skeleton Kings. I wouldn't be drawing it... But one of my favorite unknown artists ever is interested in drawing it... we'll talk later.

Sweet fucking shit my computer is making REALLY scary noises. Shit man. This is shitty. Oh well, whatever. WHATEVRRRRRRR

Saw Iron Man again. Decided it is the best super-hero movie ever (so long, Batman Begins).

Still in my hometown Bremerton, Sharkife 2-ing away. In a week, 6 pages inked, 8 or 9 (or more?) pencilled.

New concern is that I may go OVER my estimated page count for the book.

The book is balls-out.

Besides Sharknifing and watching Iron Man, I spend my time in Bremerton playing my new casual sports obsession: Disc Golf.

Got hit in the head by a disc while playing Disc Golf today. I'm OK (for I am ninja), but it could have been bad. All Disc Golfers take heed.

Got tons of ideas and plans for a lot of comic projects after I'm done with Sharknife 2. Unsure which avenue to persue, but I think more Sharknife is inevitable.

Still nervous about my GRAYTONER scenario for Sharknife. Thanks to the few who volunteered... I'm too busy drawing to follow it up. Apparently Oni is gonna organize something, and Los Fokos is still toning the pages he has... Hopefully something will solidify in the next couple months.

Saw most of (but not the ending) Batman vs Dracula today. Good shit! I need to get all these awesome animated super hero movies. They're so inspirational to me.

Probably heading back to the city tomorrow to get ready for the Emerald City Con. That will be fun. Oh yeah, I will BE THERE if you want to see me or some shit. Perhaps I will sell original art.

Best Marvel Super Hero movie ever, easily. Best Comic Book Super Hero movie ever? The only competition is Batman Begins. It depends what kind of playboy you want. Brooding man in black, or hyper-spaz in McDonald's colors. I lean toward Hyper-Spaz McNugget.

I am holed up in my hometown of Bremerton for a while to attempt to monk-out and draw a crapload of Sharknife pages. It's going well so far... But it is certainly boring here. That's the point though. No distractions.

Well anyway, back to it. See Iron Man. Anyone who insults that movie is my enemy whom I am sworn to destroy. Not kidding. Do not make me destroy you.

Suuuuuup.

No more whining from me. It's time to suck it up and get Double Z finished for real now. Total page count at the moment is 134. About 30 of those need inking still. Then about another 30 pages left to fully draw after that. So, if I can ink 2 a day, and then draw the rest... I should be able to wrap this up in June, and hopefully we can get it all printed and ready for SDCC. (I pencilled 3 and inked 1.5 today, so bully to mee)

This is a comics miracle waiting to happen. Let's fucking do it.

Oh yes, for this miracle to happen, I also need some Gray Scale Toners to help finish the book... I need seriously good toning people to help out. Maybe take 5-page chunks, etc. I only need maybe 2 or 3 volunteers, and you must be AWESOME. No "sure, I'll take a whack at it!" shit, only "FUCK YES, I WILL TEMPER MY GRAYSCALER SOUL IN THE FLAMES OF DOUBLE Z" applicants only. Must have an understanding of my art style, and how to apply gray tones to COMIC ART. No amateurs!!! Sorry to be harsh, but you know.

Oni is scouting out their own toners to help out, and Los Fokos (from Vol.1) will most likely be handling a chunk of the book as well. But to get this 100% ready for SDCC, we need a fucking X-FORCE TEAM of TONERS ready to rip it deep. You will be urged to emulate Los Fokos' style from the first book, but a personal touch on it is no problem. Which is why I would break up toners into SCENES. That way, each scene will just have it's own tone look to it. Dig?

The only bad news about this Double Z madness is... My Commissions will have to wait. I sincerely regret how shitty I am about getting these commissions done and sent to people. I have been a mess for about 2 years now. Which is about how long some people have had to wait for their drawings. I will draw them. People will get them. It will be glorious. (For mental comfort, imagine one of those posters of a kitten hanging from a tree saying "Hang in there!")

I did the Stumptown convention in Oregon last weekend. It was cool. To prove how awesome I can be at drawing sometimes, I whipped up 12 drawings in like 3 hours to sell at the con. But I became so attached to them that I only sold one (making the only money for myself from the con-- a whopping ten dollars! it's cool tho, I scored an awesome Iron Man mug while down there, too, which is worth more than money).

Jfish scanned all of them, but he has no internet right now coz he's moving. But I scanned a couple of them just now.

There Will Be Blood fan art:

Ya, these are about my favorite drawings ever. I think I have to do more There Will Be Blood fanart... Also included in this set is a Terminator 2 fan art, and a new Optimus Chronic drawing... Sometime soon I'll try to get the other 10 drawings up.

Also at Stumptown, I participated in an "art battle" at a party. It was "Web Comics vs Print Comics". Jfish and I represented print comics (although I fancy myself an artist of both print and web). Instead of actually drawing my opponent, which I was supposed to do for the "charicature" draw-off, I drew all four Ninja Turtles and Shredder, to the crowd's enjoyment. It was pretty fucking legendary. People were taking pictures, so if anyone knows where I can see them, let me know!!

Okay, it's on like Donkey Kong. Time to Shadow the Wolf. Double Z to infinity. Excelsior.

New T-Shirt up on Design By Humans!

I whipped this up real fast last night just coz. Go vote for it if you like it!

And...

I just heard news that Zuda (DC's online-comics site) is having a "Summer Invitational" contest, for Zuda comic entries that were in the running but didn't win. I'd like to see Dead in the Now get in the running again. I'm still quite attached to the comic, and I'd like to see it materialize somehow.

To get DitN in the running again, go to the Zuda Comics site, log in (or register) and click the "Feedback" button in the upper right, and send them a note demanding that Dead in the Now return in July.

I'm HOPING that they'll let me draw another chapter of the comic, as well, as the first round on the site gave me a lot of good feedback on how to handle the story. A lot of people had a problem with the main character's seemingly evil attitude. That, along with my recent obsession with "Zeitgeist"-level conspiracy theories, has led me to a new story direction.

A blurb:

In the not distant future, the World Government has implanted a "Z-Chip" in the skulls of the majority of the world's population. This chip turns humans into mindless "Worker Bees". Suddenly, various Worker Bees begin to succumb to assassination, and re-animation, seemingly turning into "Zombies". Somehow, these Zombies seem to be more liberated than the government's Worker Bees. The World Government tries desperately to uncover the source of this revolution, unknown to the fact that the mastermind behind the "Zombie Liberation Plot" is the President's own genius son, Braz.

So you see, in this new structure, Braz would be "liberating" people by turning them into zombies. Of course, it's still a little fucked up. But that's where the fun comes in.

Anyway... Whatever. Another avenue of art to hopefully get some creative juices squoze, and potentially get some monies. Since it seems I am totally NOT getting that regular part-time job I applied for. I could use some Zuda dollaz.

Some people don't like Zuda. Some people also don't like the idea of me getting a regular job. Well, some people don't know everything! *flick nutsack*

My friends Brandon and James were both nominated for Eisners. It's awesome... FOR THEM. But naturally, being their bro, my mind wonders "WHERE'S MY AWARD". Seems like most all my comic making friends are award-winning or nominated... Sure, I haven't put out my own books since '05... But where was everyone in '05?? I guess creating Sharknife is it's own unique achievement, and the publishers and people in the industry assumed that, and all the LADIES I get, was good enough for me. SURE IT IS.

Anyway, they both deserve it. Brandon's book is his master opus (so far), and James was manufactured in the sequential demon machine. In this world of comics, Brandon is the hardened monk, and James is the gifted orc with magical powerz, of course those two characters get their own sacred jewels... I'm the cynical swordman, who doesn't really even care about the world to begin with (only my sword, and what it cuts), so no jewel for me. I'd only cut it in half anyway.

I predict 50/50 that they will totally win, too. Especially now that I am talking about it (I'm superstitious like that). I should finish my book so I could be eligible for that shit. Not because I want an award, just so I can flash it at Brandon whenever he starts to talk about his.

But it turns out I misread the terms of the contest. I was just supposed to re-color their current logo (lame). A detail I failed to notice until finishing this piece. Shit, it said "make a new design", I assumed that meant more than a freaking coloring contest. I think I'll submit it anyway, since I think mine is way better than what they have now. Either way, not a waste of an hour.

And now, a true story!

Sharknifing. Need to send out commissions. Tomorrow I'm interviewing for a part-time job at Pike Place Market (rad open market in Seattle) at an art gallery. It would be nice to get a couple hundred bucks every two weeks (the notion blows my fucking mind). Wish me luck.

for a minute to inform you of my favorite 3 manga right now:

ZETMAN:

It's got the intensity and rage of Berserk, but the pacing and restraint of Vagabond. It also has transformations and monsters and hyper violence on par with Guyver. The fight scenes are way bad assly illustrated.

RAL GRAD:

This comic is pure entertainment. It's all about a young warrior battling with a dragon hiding in his shadow, and all of his decisions in life are based on titties. Takeshi Obata is the former artist of DEATH NOTE, another sensational comic. Though Death Note was mostly casual, Obata throws down hard in this one. He is NO SLOUCH when it comes to action, monsters, angles, everything. I'd say he's one of the most fluid action comic artists operating right now. Jason from Floating World originally showed me this comic, saying it was perfect for me. And it is. You can tell both the writer and artist are having a lot of fun doing this. I wish I could've found a better picture to plug, but it seems Ral Grad is still pretty unknown. That will probably change soon.

O-PARTS HUNTER:

This shit is silly and fun, which is why it's rad. It's totally Dragon Ball mixed with Naruto, exactly. Harmoniously fitting, due to the creator being the younger twin brother of the Naruto creator. I don't think anyone else could pull this off with the sincerity this dude can. If there's any question, just remember that the main character has a boomerang (sweet).

Good inspiring comics help me make comics. Since my last flip out post I've drawn some new pages. Go me.

I also want to honorably mention the documentary Zeitgeist which I only just saw, and was blown away by:

A lot of the times when I'm depressed about life, it seems that I have no good reason. Art and living each day is really pretty rad. If anything upsets me, it's the bullshit system we humans have created in the last couple hundred years, that we are enslaved by. Social status, religion, money... THAT SHIT ALL DEPRESSES ME. And this movie, although not absolute truth, spoke to me in a way that seemed very organic to me. Give it a try if you feel like I do. Like a round mango in a crab juice world.

Sharknife Double Z has LOS FOKOS back on for tones, officially. We only just started toning pages. I still have a shit ass fuck load of pages to draw, to be honest. I don't know how I feel about a San Diego release for the book... Honestly, skipping that con this year wouldn't be a tragedy. I got Mal coming to Seattle this month, and Liz in Portland next month. And I just saw Becky & Vasilis in SF. SD has little beyond that to offer me, if Sharknife isn't done. And about it being done; I am totally letting myself breathe right now. I don't know why art living and life can be so hard, but it happens. Taking on too much work is a factor, and then when that all builds up, it's hard to even find STROKE ONE.

Plus, I just got word that one of my favorite cons, the Vancouver Comics & Stories con (hosted by Leanord Wong) will be in late August... If I end up missing solicits for July, then August would probably be the new Double Z target release. I think having my own personal debut for the book at a low-key convention sounds chill and pleasant.

But, It's my personal artistic kung-fu training to attempt to finish this whole thing in time for the big con. I am not abandoning that flame of hope. Just pointing out the shit variables.

I don't know why I talk about all this. I have been bugged lately about my inability to be completely on top of my shit. Sharing is caring.

Still working on commissions. Aka: Being a good person. I promise I'll send those all out soon, between daily miracles of making two Sharknife pages a day happen.

I'm now discovering what it is I want to display and say in comics. Something I didn't think about before I made two graphic novels and splashed into this industry (See: It was Pure Instinct). That pesky detail has derailed me somewhat these last couple years... And I must admit, the decided 50/50 skepticism of my content, and how much it really matters. How good are good drawings without solid plot? Perhaps after this next round of pure energy fight comics, I'll bend things out to the level my standards are now demanding of me.

Blind-siding comics from out of nowhere and poofing without a trace was the main appeal of making comics for me, initially. Now that people are actually looking to me for exciting new content, I'm like "whoa". I actually have to think about this.

That could be a mistake. Maybe I shouldn't be so thoughtful. That is not how THE REY acts, is it?? I am pure energy. I should just ride my energy forever. Well, I have to tell you, along with my energy, I have a heavy conscience. It tells me to be better, constantly. But whining isn't attractive.

Lately I have an inclination to create new artistic monikers for myself for each project, just so it seems like someone new is emerging with all these stories each time they come out. I enjoy the theatrics. I theorize that sometimes to make truly groundbreaking comics, you have to be a character yourself.

I reckon I'll stop struggling and let this lifestyle take me to wherever it is I'm destined to go.

Just have to draw comics more. It's as simple as the Nike Swoosh.

This is serious. I want my own version of artistic success, unlike what my good friends enjoy. I want to want it more than just desiring it, or mimic it. It has to be it's own thing. I don't want my life to be something I do when not drawing. I want it all to stream flow together.

Anyway, right now this success is personified in a 2-years overdue action comic sequel of my first published book ever.

Ping-Pong: Consistency! Yesterday I spent the most time I have yet just PRACTICING. A nice old fellow helped me work on my forehand. It was that back-and-forth style rally you see in Ping-Pong movies, etc. I did that! Longest rally I've ever had, too... Must've been at least 50 consecutive hits. I worked on my backhands and cuts, too. Man, I'm getting pretty OK. My highest-ranked friend commented that I have "blossomed" since beginning this whole thang. I wish I could play more than once a week, now.

PINAPL COLORS: Thanks everyone who has submitted colors to me. Sadly, I haven't seen anything that really nails what I want to see. Sorry I haven't replied personally to anyone who's submitted yet... I'm just too busy. I have to finish drawing the rest of the pages today. Then I'll hit y'all back with more definitive guidelines on what kind of colors I want to see. One suggestion though, I want LESS colors, actually. And LESS rendering. My style these days is somewhat "flat" and "wavy", so, the colors should facilitate that. Seeing people try to render my crazy weird shapes is sometimes painful :] But besides that, I'm stoked so many people are using my page to practice with.

I got my shirts from Design By Humans. My own shirts, as well as a bunch from the site. They are SO awesome. I wish I had a camera so I could model them for you. I'll probably use my Shirt of the Week winnings to get one (a camera). You should really own my shirt, you can get it right heah!

Sorry no recent activity on Ninja Rage-- This week has been crazy busy.

COMMISSIONS: The overall status is, most all the drawings are started, a lot of them are finished (you can look at the Com Page, but I haven't updated it in a while >_<). I'm sorry I'm like "biding my time" on sending them out... Well a few factors have led to that 1) Currently broke, 2) I'd like to DOCUMENT the shipping process (the special packaging I'm making, etc-- again, I need a camera) and 3) It's difficult to CUT THE CHORD when you freshly make an awesome drawing :o (of course, you shorty portraiteers have been waiting for over 2 years now... um "lol"?). Anyway, art for the masses, very soon. This all falls in that "thanks everyone for helping me live / being the reason I live the way I do" category, so yeah, thanks for everything.

ART: Here's the first page to my new PINAPL story which will appear in Image's POPGUN Vol.2 (with a cover by Paul Pope!)

Yeah, I like it. This story's only gonna be about 5 pages long. Mal says I need to use "actual gutters" sometimes... Like, actual space between the panels, some white space to offset some panels, and straight lines for panel borders... I agree with most except the STRAIGHT LINES. I'm kind of way into raw imperfect panel borders right now. But that's probably mostly just coz I hate reaching for my ruler. I like a "frontpage" to a comic (especially one in a giant anthology) to be a filled-space "poster"-kind of type thing. So that's what's going on here, I reckon.

Oh yeah, I'm kind of looking for a COLORIST for it, too. Can be fancy, can be simple 2-4 color treatment. Whatever! Apply in comments. (needs to be done this month)

JEFF RAMOS BLOG: An online pal of mine, Jeff Ramos, has a NEW BLOG in which he talks about music, movies and cool art happenings. He mentions Jfish and I, and our involvement with great new online t-shirt company Design By Humans.

Ping-Pong: (I play ping-pong every week at the Asian rec center, I will be blogging about it now, sometimes) // Week 1 of March, I played probably the best ping-pong of my life. I was returning slams and had a semblance of a solid defense! Offense is my specialty, usually... I am able to psych out opponents with my unusual style, and I have a pretty good stealth-slam (it just barely makes it over the net, and sneaks right under my opponent's arm before he/she can even think to hit it!). But defensively, I'm weaker, so it was good to get that on track. Week 2 March, WORST ping-pong ever. I didn't win a single match (I think I won four on Week Mar 1). AND I lost my keys :[ Here's hoping week 3 is more stupendous. I need to assert myself more! I'm a pretty decent player, I just need more confidence. I admit it is a little intimidating playing alongside mostly very skilled old chinese guys.

Random MUSIC awesome: Perusing Jeff Ramos' blog & myspace led me to The Ting Tings. I like them. They are good. The girl is ridiculously pretty, yeah. They're British. I randomly sent them a message of praise / offering my SKILLZ. They ACTUALLY got back to me this morning :o I may be doing some art for them! Wow! Prospering artists are in tune with each-other.

Yeah, it's all about the endless avenues you can take with your art. Between Sharknife, Design By Humans and my random music / game / media art gigs I get, I feel like I'm communicating pretty well with the pockets of the world that I think need my art in their life. NOW one of the tricks is just to expand my own art, and it's message, so that it can appeal to people out there not even LOOKING for my kind of art, but when they see it, they want it anyway. Yeah? Sure.

New STREET FIGHTER IV character, El Fuerte!

Aw yea. Lucha Libre fighting all up in STREET FIGHTER, the best game by the best company suited to bringing this amazing unique fighting style to LYFFEE. I am stoked. I love the character design, too. Serious potential! This game has me coolin'. I can't stop playing it on Jacob's Xbox Live account because of it. If you run into "Aalipop" on there, that's me.

Someone asked in my last post, since I claim now to have worked for Sega, Konami, etc, what exactly I did for them. I may have posted these drawings on my LJ before, but in case not:

First, I worked on a pitch for a new Jet Grind Radio game for the Wii:

Second, I worked on a pitch for a Castlevania cartoon:

Both projects were through 3rd party developers, but they were still technically "for" the major companies. I even got to meet with the Castlevania creator at Comic-Con '06. It was wayyyy awesome. The meeting mostly covered story & plot ideas, and when they got to the art part, it was just a very brief "The art's good." and moved on. ha ha.

This kind of work, and a lot more stuff I did for Hasbro, Gain, etc, has been a big part of why comics has taken me so long the last couple years. I like to try everything out. I don't consider myself a comic artist only. Hence my current T-shirt obsession.

There was a lot more art produced for both of these pitches. Early morning drawing:

Talk about inspiration, that's what this girl is to me.

I'm gonna get some groceries and then come home, draw some Sharknife, then draw a couple commissions and then tomorrow send them out. Like, you guys don't understand... When I finally send these out, it's gonna be worth everything. Coz I don't just make art and stuff it in an envelope and forget about it... I make the whole experience worthwhile.

No new news on the new shirt yet... I submitted it but it hasn't gone up yet. I feel like this one is cursed. It probably is. Too ambitious a design. Oh well... It's a crazy drawing, at least. The next ones will be more mass-appeal-style.

Haven't sent this one in to the shirt makin' place yet... but yeah. Last-minute idea come to liiifeeee. First I wanted a mouth on a shirt, then I needed ninjas. THAT TENDS TO HAPPEN. The need for ninjas.

My Buddha shirt won shirt of the day on Design By Humans, and just this weekend, it won shirt of the week! This is an insane bonus for me. Thanks everyone who voted and purchased one of these. Thanks Warren Ellis.

I might get a blogger account for artwork-only stuff? Is that an idea? I'm not sure. Leave the ranting to a concentrated dose of friends-only? Man, that's a pretty awesome idea.

I am definitely spent. Maybe I'll sleep a little and then wake up and draw 40 pages of Sharknife and finish it. This weekend was good, I took a break on tha Nife and did these grapes and shirt drawings... WEEKEND MATERIAL. Now back to the "work week"... I think this week is all about finishing Sharknife vs Swordfish monster battle. Yeah.

The comic above will act as a "prelude" to the current direction the RAAD Grapes (or R-Grapes) are going in... You'll notice in the top most image, they look a little updated, etc. Yeah.

I am not the kind of guy who can work on one thing at a time. In case you didn't know. I am doing pretty well on staying Sharknife focused lately, though. The idea that I'll have more than 2 books in my repertoire is becoming a reality... a frightening, horrible reality. I can't wait. I'm never dragging like that again. Pure content from me from now 'til infinity is what I pledge.

Really want to get a new website up soon... I was all about it last month, but have since moved on to doing more important things... shit. I'll try to get something up soon. I really need a solid display of my entire art history, as it is formidable.

And, working on commissions! You'll all be updated soon, promisesies.

This was maybe... probably the best comic con I've done since TCAF '05. People were not just friendly, they were fuckin' beautiful. I think a handy new trick is to do the thing hard during the day, and avoid all the parties at night.

That isn't to say I avoided parties... Just comic bookery ones. I hype up my shit enough on the internet, i don't need to get drunk and do it in person to comic headz. Nah, for me this time, It was all SF parties, all the time. Some real deal SF house parties... DJ's, dance-offs, illicit activity, rooftop smoke-sesh, after-hour reunion... JOWAD. you my dawg. THA NUTSHAK.

Wow... Bellingham, Portland and SF all visited and suckled-on hard so far in '08.

Now, if I may, I will be rocking the fuck out of some comics. This con was one of those, the type to invigorate the passion stoke HARD-- WITH TITS.

(Srsly, so many pretty girls met over the week... I had to draw a chart to remember them all........)

Was in the laid back town of Portland for the last week and a few days. Random spontaneous adventure. Had a great time hanging out with a bunch of very warm people, new great friends.

Scanned about 50 pages of Sharknife while down there... It felt good to put some of these pages to bed that have been gnawing on me. At the same time, seeing clearly the pages I have completed, glaringly displays how many I STILL need to draw!

I swear to god, It will be a miracle when this book is completed. Pigs will grow arms and people will shit lava. This thing moves so slow. No matter how many pages I finish in a day, it seems I'm eternally at the halfway point, length wise. Of course it doesn't help that there is no script for this and the entire book is complete pure impulse. That's what Sharknife Double Z is. Comics from the GUT. Truly.

I recovered a sketchbook I had from early last year containing like 20 pages of early Sharknife 2 thumbs... this is from my phase where I was really stoked about thumbing for like 2 weeks, then later it stunted my process because I didn't wanna RE-DRAW the thumbs (which were kind of large already and looked good). So I ended up scrapping that segment. But, going with my new theme of BRINGING EVERYTHING BACK, I salvaged the wicked fight scene, and am inking the shit right on top of the moderately sized thumbs.

This brings up two points about new comics making:

1- Drawing really tiny is actually awesome and much faster for comics production. Easier for me to organize panel layout and spacial things within the page, etc.

2- The ultimate sum of pages for Double Z range from really large comic size, to moderate flimsy paper sketchbook size, to tiny drawing paper size, to printer paper, to 10x14" bristol size. Hilarious. I wanted to totally avoid that for this book (Sharknife 1 had different page sizes & types too)-- But it seems everything I wanted to avoid, work-wise, has happened to me in the production of this book. So yeah.

Oh and 3, I'm a fucking psycho? Yeah. This is the last book I'm gonna flip out this bad over. After this pulsating chunk of beating-heart comics, it's on to straight-faced value and entertainment with an actual schedule and scripts.

Will it be out for San Diego? I'm still pulling for it... Who knows, though. I can't fight it anymore. This book is simply a beast. I'm riding it like a stallion until it decides it's done.
