This Song Is Tasty.
My friends Brandon and James were both nominated for Eisners. It's awesome... FOR THEM. But naturally, being their bro, my mind wonders "WHERE'S MY AWARD". Seems like most all my comic making friends are award-winning or nominated... Sure, I haven't put out my own books since '05... But where was everyone in '05?? I guess creating Sharknife is it's own unique achievement, and the publishers and people in the industry assumed that, and all the LADIES I get, was good enough for me. SURE IT IS.

Anyway, they both deserve it. Brandon's book is his master opus (so far), and James was manufactured in the sequential demon machine. In this world of comics, Brandon is the hardened monk, and James is the gifted orc with magical powerz, of course those two characters get their own sacred jewels... I'm the cynical swordman, who doesn't really even care about the world to begin with (only my sword, and what it cuts), so no jewel for me. I'd only cut it in half anyway.

I predict 50/50 that they will totally win, too. Especially now that I am talking about it (I'm superstitious like that). I should finish my book so I could be eligible for that shit. Not because I want an award, just so I can flash it at Brandon whenever he starts to talk about his.

I drew this today for a "contest" one of my favorite Seattle coffee shops is having:

But it turns out I misread the terms of the contest. I was just supposed to re-color their current logo (lame). A detail I failed to notice until finishing this piece. Shit, it said "make a new design", I assumed that meant more than a freaking coloring contest. I think I'll submit it anyway, since I think mine is way better than what they have now. Either way, not a waste of an hour.

And now, a true story!

Sharknifing. Need to send out commissions. Tomorrow I'm interviewing for a part-time job at Pike Place Market (rad open market in Seattle) at an art gallery. It would be nice to get a couple hundred bucks every two weeks (the notion blows my fucking mind). Wish me luck.

to clarify, I'm not bitter about not getting awards. it has no impact on my production. it's just amusing to talk about.

thanks anyway, though. I know you're just trying to help! but with my personality, you'd be better off saying something like "GIVE UP YOU HACK" coz then i'd be all "NO WAY" and attack my shit with even more vigor.

yeah, that was more like "just keep going for your own sake", than "stop being bitter".

i don't like telling people to give up on their stuff, so you'll have to make do by imagining Kamina punching you instead. :>

Bauhaus would be making a mistake if they didn't use your design for SOMETHING. That's fucking killer, that old man is killer. Keep on the lookout for poster design jobs, they're so much fun.

You'll get your moment in the sun, as will I. Gallery job sounds good, you'll probably get time between clients to at least doodle.

I'm glad you finally drew up the Tom hanks blessing story.
That should get printed.
I think the dumb award nominations bring more attention to our gang in general.
I was thinking today how overlooked Vasilis' book was. Not to mentioned the Dammned (my 2 favorate books this year by dudes I haven't lived with)
Also I think the comix statosphere has changed lots since sharknife first
came out of the womb.

Out of curiosity, I compared this year's "Best Writer/Artist" noms to those from two years ago. Kyle Baker and Eric Powell jumped into the fray both years. And I'd say this year's Fred Chao (Johnny Hiro) is the equivalent of 2006's Paige Braddock (Jane's World). Which leaves O'Malley and Seth replaced by Brando Grayo and Jamesoe Stokoe. Has Mister Graham usurped the funny throne from the Scott Pilgrim-makin' Superstar or is he the next generation's Seth (Wimbledon Graham or Palooka City... pick your own pun)?

Does any of this mean anything? No. I'm drunk and bored.

Maybe Tom hanks, walked off set. Found another pregnant mother in the parking lot and said "I CURSE this child!" now you the blessed, and the other kid, the cursed have to find each other and battle.

reasons corey is awesome:
killer artist but still kicks it with the common man in the open air markets.

reasons corey is lame:
sharknife 2 is 2 years 2 late.

Your day at the Eisners will come, dude. Just keep drawin', keep on buildin' up the EXP. Your comics are like David Bowie's music: ahead of the times.

What's up with a "re-color our logo" contest? Sorry, but that seems a bit lame. You should totally submit your new logo; if they're smart, they'll reward you with a lifetime supply of coffee. And, y'know, money.

Also, I dig how you made Tom Hanks look like Spike from Cowboy Bebop. ^_^

I'd just like to point out that you're not a cynical swordman, you're more of an x-ray ranger. Sharknife 1 wasn't inked so I don't think you qualify as melee class. Plus you've got a good mix of supportive magic and range attacks to facilitate awards, so just... PUT OUT A NEW BOOK ALREADY!!! Remember, I don't expect anything less than greatness from you.

PS that coffee guy is aces!
